In this exciting issue:
• EP news, reviews & radio
• Efpi exploits in Helsinki
• 2010 gig news
ep news and happenings
If you weren’t already aware, our debut EP was released on Efpi Records in December, and so far its been really well received! If you haven’t already then you can still purchase or download the EP from the Efpi Records website – if you’re after one of the limited edition handmade copies you better hurry though, as stock is quickly dwindling…
The EP was reviewed by Mike Butler in the Manchester Evening News, where it was awarded 4/5 stars which we’re really proud of! You can see the full text of the review here.
We were also featured in the January NWJazzworks newsletter with a review by Chris Ackerley, who has worked with BBC Jazz on 3, Jazzwise and Serious in the past so he definitely knows what he’s talking about… He describes the EP as “nothing less than a bombardment of the senses… the cream of Manchester’s emerging jazz talent” which is great! Full text of the review over at Chris’ blog, The Sound of Now, which is also well worth keeping an eye on.
The first track from the EP, ‘bake’ was featured in the latest episode of the GetJazzical podcast, a series that highlights the very best contemporary classical and jazz music. We’re the final track of Season Two, Episode Two which can be downloaded from here or you can find it on the iTunes podcast directory.
Finally, I was really excited to find that we were played on Mike Chadwick’s Cutting Edge show on Jazz FM this past Sunday (7th Feb)! He played ‘bake’ again – check out the show’s playlist here and listen again until Sunday here.

I went to Finland before Christmas with Anton to visit Sam who’s there studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He’d also set up an Efpi Records showcase gig for HAQ and ‘Beats & Pieces Finland’, a big band featuring a crack team of young musicians based in Helsinki which I directed. The whole project was great fun for everyone involved (I think…!) and it was great to meet and work with such a great band. Photos from the gig can be found in the photo gallery on the website.
We played our first gig of the year last week at the Spin Off in Leeds – thanks a lot to Tommy and everyone for having us! We really enjoyed ourselves and hope all of the small but enthusiastic audience did too… Further confirmed dates are listed below, and I’m busy organising some more at the moment so keep checking the website to see when we’ll be visiting a town near you!
Friday 21st May – The Forge, Camden (Tickets available from the Forge)
Saturday 10th July – Marlborough Jazz Festival
Hope to see you at some of those dates! And as always, please spread the word…
